Attractions on the island

ST. MARKO CATHEDRAL
On the ground floor of the bell tower of the cathedral of St. Marka houses the “Pieta” by Ivan Meštrović, and the statue of Jesus the Redeemer by Fran Kršinić.
Next to the entrance door to the sacristy, there is a statue of St. Vlaho, the patron of the city of Dubrovnik, also a work by Ivan Mestrović and reliefs of Blessed Alojzije Stepinac (Kerdić), Mother Teresa, Marija Propetog Petković and Ivan Merc (A. Lozic).
At the entrance to the sacristy is a relief of Saint Michael, a beautiful Gothic work by an unknown artist (14th/15th century).
MARKO POLO’S HOUSE
World traveler, explorer, travel writer, imperial emissary, Marco Polo was born in 1254 in Korčula.
The Polo’s family house in Mleci disappeared and gave way to a theater, while in Korčula the family house was preserved, as well as the memory of the great Marko. Today, the Depolo family is one of the oldest Korčula families.

THE LAND DOOR
There are two symbols of Korčula’s history above the entrance to the Land Gate:
– a plaque with the winged lion of Saint Mark as a symbol of the rule of the Venetian Republic,
– and a commemorative plaque on the 1000th anniversary of the coronation of the first Croatian king Tomislav.
TOWERS AND BARRELS
In 1871, the demolition of walls and towers began. Namely, in 1863, the Ministry of War from Vienna informed the municipal administration that the towers and walls were returned to its disposal as unnecessary, and that they would no longer bear the costs of their maintenance.
The council responded to this by demolishing the largest part of the city wall, except for the southern part, and by demolishing three towers.
Between the Zakrjan and Rampada towers (the modern name for the remains of the All Saints Tower from 1493) there were two more towers demolished in the 19th century: the Parilo tower and the New Gate tower.
On Rampada itself, the walls and foundations of an older tower – the Small Tower of All Saints – demolished in 1879 are visible today.
